Jane Dornacker: It Was 20 Years Ago Today

During one of the final years of WNBC's existence at AM 66, was the tragic helicopter crash that took the life of traffic reporter Jane Dornacker.

I hope that even twenty years after, her family is still able to get by, with the grace of God.

Hear audio of the incident as it happened on-air.

If you don't wish to hear it, Jane's Wikipedia entry has a transcript.

And Allan Sniffen's New York Radio Message Board currently has a thread marking the anniversary, including input from then-fellow WNBC personality Big Jay Sorensen.
Comments:
Honestly, I can't listen. I was probably the world's biggest Joey Reynolds/WNBC fan at that time and can remember listening to this when it happened from the car parking lot outside the Naval Shipyard Norfolk VA. Talk about a groupie.

Jayne and the rest of the gang always brought a smile to me, a lonely batchelor doing time in the Navy. So, it is just like yesterday and I'm really afraid that as hard as I took this event all those years ago, it'll bring another tear to my eye. Its one of those events that leaves an impression.

I wonder if anyone remembers what happened on WNBC after the accident. To recant, after the top of the hour news, WNBC went into a very soft mode for about two days. Soft AC tunes like Christopher Cross' "Sailing", etc, played non-stop, interspersed with an announcement from the GM which started with ..."WNBC has suffered a tragedy." This temporary format ran in all dayparts for those two days. Maybe it was three... even through the Soupy Sales show, and I believe even through the Imus show, with part timers (IIRC) manning the board through the period.

And I couldn't unglue my ear from the radio speaker. We all shared in the sadness.

Well, Joe, thanks for this somber reminder.

Granted, it isn't like I will be touching on this subject every October 22. But when there's an anniversary of a tragic circumstance - usually a number of years rounded off to a 5 or 0 - the norm has been to reminisce on the tragic day in question, and we've seen many such anniversaries in the last five years alone: The 40th anniversary of the JFK assassination... The 20th anniversary of John Lennon's death (and mind you, the 25th anniversary is approaching in about a month)... The 5th anniversary of 9/11... I could go on... And at the same time, I do apologize if any of my readers considered me insensitive for posting this memoriam in the first place... Then again, the mass media gets that all the time...

Thanks for your input, Mr. West.
